Description
Newfoundland is an island off the coast of Canada. Archaeological excavations show that it was originally settled by the Vikings. Newfoundland became a province of Canada in 1949. Previous to that, the island was a colony and dominion of the United Kingdom. Newfoundland is known for its rugged coastline of cliffs and crags. Many of its inhabitants are descendants of English, Scottish and Irish immigrants who made their living from the sea. From 1857-1949, Newfoundland issued its own postage stamps. Many of these early issues are quite rare and valuable.
