Description

Sri Lanka is a small island nation off the southern tip of India. Once known as Ceylon, it has been colonized by many nations including Portugal and Britain. However, in 1948, Sri Lanka becam an independant country. Stamps have been issued for and by Ceylon since colonial times, but the first stamps inscribed Sri Lanka were issued in 1972. Sri Lanka is a well known tourist destination which unfortunately made international headlines when a tsunami hit the area in 2004.
