Peru is a country in South America bordered by Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the Pacific Ocean. Peru is a land of mountainous heights as well as dense forest. This region of the earth was once the domain of the Incas and remains of their advanced civilization can still be viewed, such as the impressive structure of Machu Picchu. Much of its population are descendents of the original Indian inhabitants, such as the Quechua tribe. The region was a Spanish colony until 1821, the year that Peru gained independence.
