Nevis is an island in the Caribbean. Once covered by forests and home to a large system of coral reefs, the colonisation of the island led to a massive destruction of its ecosystem. The European settlers cleared the lush landscape to prepare for extensive sugar and cotton plantations, to the point where the forest no longer exists. Nevis previously used the stamps of St. Kitts Nevis, as far back as 1861. However, in 1980, Nevis established its own postal administration and began issuing its own postage stamps.
