The Central African Republic, or CAR, is located in central Africa. It is a landlocked country sharing borders with Chad, the Sudan, Republic of Congo, and Cameroon. As a French Colony is was known as Ubangi-Chari, and stamps were emitted with that name. The birth of the Central African Republic was declared in December, 1958 and now has a democratically elected Prime Minister. CAR is a very poor nation with its population subsisting on agriculture, and the nation's primary export is diamonds. The postal history of independent Central African Republic begins in 1959.
