China is a large country in eastern Asia. As far back as 1000 BC, China had an internal governmental postal service. China's postal history is long and complicated because the post system changed throughout each dynasty, civil war, the years of the Japanese occupation until the present day government. At the end of the Opium War, foreign post offices were opened and China entered the world's postal system. Its first stamps were emitted in May 1878. Most of the stamps from this packet date from the Republic of China and Formosa (Taiwan).
