It is a land of contrasts; from the hot, dry desert to the cool ocean breezes that lead to lush vegetation. Senegal was a French possession until its independence in 1960. The region used stamps of French West Africa with several different overprints depending on the name of the region at the time. The modern postal history of Senegal began in 1960.
