The country of Ukraine is in Eastern Europe. Once a part of the USSR, the Ukraine is now an independence republic. When part of the Soviet Union, the Ukraine was known as the "bread basket of Russia". It has a strong agricultural tradition, but it is also a modern country. Kiev is its capital city. The postal history of the Ukraine goes all the way back to 1918 when it was still an independent republic. After being assimilated by the USSR, its stamps were issued by the Soviets. Ukrainian culture is known for its colorful traditional costumes and vibrantly painted Easter eggs.
