Tristan da Cunha is an archipelago in the southern Atlantic Ocean, and also the name of the main inhabited island. It counts roughly 200 inhabitants. It is considered to be one of the most remote areas of the world, being a great distance from any of the closest continents. Residents of Tristan da Cunha survive by farming the land and caring for livestock. Interestingly, no foreigner is allowed to own land on the island or settle there. The islands are now an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The postal history of Tristan da Cunha begins in 1952. The sale of postage stamps is an important source of income for the islanders.
