St-Thomas and Prince Islands are two islands off the western coast of Africa. These islands were uninhabited before being discovered by the Portuguese. They were adopted as trading bases and early settlers were shipped there from Portugal; the inhabitants continue to speak Portuguese to this day. Independence from Portugal was obtained in 1975.
