Ryukyu Islands is a chain of islands in the western Pacific Ocean near Japan. One of the most well known islands in this chain is Okinawa Island. The Ryukyu Islands saw much military action during World War II, which has had a lasting effect to this day. The administration of Ryukyu Islands has passed through the hands of many nations, but from 1948-1972 they governed themselves, until Japan took over. Thus, the postal history of Ryukyu Islands dates from 1948-1972.
