Jersey is an island off the coast of Normandy in the English Channel. It is composed of the main island of Jersey as well as some small groups of islands which are no longer inhabited. The island is a British Crown Dependency, meaning the UK is responsible for its defence even though the island is not considered a part of the United Kingdom. The culture and heritage of Jersey is a mix of French and English influences. The island is well-known for its Jersey cow, a breed of cow raised for meat and especially its rich milk. Stamps began being issued in 1958.
