Dahomey was a country in western Africa which is now known as the Republic of Benin. The Kingdom of Dahomey was self-ruling until it became a part of French West Africa from 1894-1960. It gained its independence in 1960 and was then known as the Republic of Dahomey, until 1975 when it was re-named the Republic of Benin. Since it was once a French colony, the French language was widely used and still is to this day. Dahomey issued stamps from 1899-1944, and then from 1960-1975.
