On March 3rd, 2010, Canada Post began issuing a beautiful series of stamps featuring African violets. Houseplant enthusiasts are familiar with these flowering beauties which add an exotic touch to any décor. The plant was discovered in 1892 in Tanzania and seeds were sent to amateur botanists who grew the violets and introduced them to the world. Several species of African violets are endangered due to the destruction of their habitat. Their delicate reddish purple, violet, light blue or white flowers stand out spectacularly against rounded fleshy green leaves. These new stamps will certainly renew appreciation for African violets.
